World War Two medals to Horace Roberts 7th Coast Regiment Royal Artillery Taken prisoner of War by the Japanese on the fall of Singapore in 1942.                                                                                    Horace died at Kinsyoke prison of war camp in 1943

Cyril Evans Thomas

1st battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers

Cyril was a member of the Burma Star association which confirms his address on the medal box and he served with the Welch Fusiliers. He states he was awarded the 39-45 and Burma stars, the war medal. He was also awarded the defence medal, police long service medal and the St Johns Ambulance Medal.

WILLIAM SWANN

2nd battalion Duke of Wellingtons Regiment

William was killed during the battle of Kohima in Burma , July 1944. He was in  76 Chindit  Long Range Penetration Group. The war diary has no record s for the day William died but at lest two soldiers from this battalion died.  The medal box is to Mrs. Winter,  Barnby Lane, Newark. This is Williams wife Evelyn, parents home.

Medals come with copy  war diary for July 1944, the month William died, 1939 census page for Evelyn's parents address and  marrage registrar for William and Evelyn's marrage in 1939

JOHN ELLIS

Hallamshire battalion York & Lancaster Regiment

On the 20th August Johns bravery earned him the Distinguished Conduct Medal for building a bridge over a river the Germans were using as a front line. Unfortunately John was killed in action on 5th November along with 5 other soldiers. Medals come with copy citation for D.C.M. and war diary for the action on 5th November.

Johns and Ellen Elizabeth Mewis were married in 1936, Ellen's father had been killed during World War One.

SIDNEY HERBERT THORN

Sidney died on the 2nd August 1943

1st battalion West Surrey Regiment

The 1st Battalion Queen’s Royal (West Surrey) Regiment served in India at the start of the Second World War and fought for a year against tribesmen on the North-West Frontier.  Sidney enlisted on 17th October 1940.

 NORMAN JOHN CAPE

2nd battalion Manchester Regiment

On the outbreak of war in 1939, 2nd Battalion was stationed in Britain and deployed straight to France in September. It had to be evacuated from Dunkirk in June 1940 and remained in Britain recovering and re-equipping until June 1942, when it was sent to India and then Burma, seeing action at Imphal-Kohima in 1944. 

Norman was a member of the Burma Star association and his details can be found on its site.
